The goal of the 2nd Gastro Hackathon, which took part in autumn 2021 in Salzburg, was to solve gastronomy oriented challenges and create new solutions in a 24 hours rapid prototyping format. Our approach to the tourist challenge was to create a non-digital approach to "drift" through the city without the constant use of a phone.
The idea is to enhance the travel experience for tourists to learn more about the city without using any digital device other than a screenless wearable. Additionally, they could also meet open-minded locals along the way and interact with them intuitively by simply waving at them. Finally, all these memories could be stored on the phone for later retrieval and reliving the journey.
The user flow of WAYVE describes three basic flows of the most important interactions.
1. Meeting friendly locals
2. Finding points of interest (POI)
3. Access to past memories
We developed a prototype with a single-board microcontroller Arduino UNO with the programming language C++ for the wearable. Additionally, we used a LED ring for visual feedback. However, due to lack of material, another type of feedback could be integrating a vibration motor.
This project won third place in the general Hackathon and a special price for Social Innovation.
The prototype build is documented on GitHub for further development.
